No Wii is safe from ‘Attack of the Movies 3D’ 06 January 2010 at 10:05 am by

Avatar may be the big buzz in 3D flicks these days, but for many, the technology is always going to be associated with monster movies and those red-and-blue anaglyph lenses. For those of us hopelessly infatuated with those ridiculous-looking lenses and cheesy movies, Majesco is publishing Attack of the Movies 3D for Wii.

The on-rails shooter features set pieces heavily inspired by movies, for up to four players to blast point-and-click their way through. With your friends, you’ll “battle large alien space cruisers, shoot underwater monsters, join the resistance against the machines and more” against enemies “culled from the annals of film history.” And you’ll get to do it in glorious red and blue — the game includes four sets of 3D glasses!

Attack of the Movies 3D is expected for release this spring.

+ Report: Hollywood interested in doing a Darksiders movie By 05 January 2010 at 8:00 pm and have No Comments

Apparently Hollywood wouldn’t mind tossing Darksiders up on the silver screen, as Vigil’s Joe Madureira confirmed to VG247 that THQ’s already been contacted for projects outside of the video game realm. “We’ve gotten some interest from Hollywood, we’ve talked about doing a comic series,” said Madureira. Obviously, a comic wouldn’t be much of a stretch for the creative director, given his past experience with the medium.

“It’s really a THQ thing, but I know they are definitely talking to people and I would be surprised if some of that stuff didn’t happen,” he added. While we can’t really say whether the prospect of either is a good thing at this point — we’re still playing Darksiders for review — we’ll be sure to let you all know either way.

+ Cameron: Smoking in Avatar a Critique of Gamers By 04 January 2010 at 1:17 pm and have No Comments

avatar

Anti-smoking watchdogs are up in arms about Sigourney Weaver’s character lighting up in the movie Avatar, but James Cameron says that her character’s cigarette habit was a critique of videogamers.

In Sunday’s New York Times, the director defended himself against critics, saying that Weaver’s character Grace Augustine was never meant to be a role model for young people. In fact, he said, her smoking was meant to be a commentary on the character’s obsession with climbing into her blue meat puppet.

“We were showing that Grace doesn’t care about her human body, only her avatar body,” Cameron said. Augustine’s destructive behavior “is a negative comment about people in our real world living too much in their avatars, meaning online and in video games.”

So the next time you watch Avatar, let it be a reminder: Raiding Ice Crown Citadel for new gear is fine, just don’t forget to take your real-world toon for a walk every now and then.

+ Sony Puts In-Theatres Movie On PlayStation Store [Psn] By 01 January 2010 at 11:00 pm and have No Comments

Earlier this week, Sony accidentally offered Armored – a movie that’s still playing in theatres – for download on the PlayStation Store. What’s more, they offered it for free. Whoops.

It was all a big mistake, of course, and one that was corrected in around five hours, but during that window it was available, people grabbed it, and people are now watching it on their PS3s and PSPs. For free.

Interesting that, mistake or not, the movie had already been processed and cleared for digital download, indicating its actual, intended release may not have been that far away.

Welcome to Joystiq’s “Naughty or Nice” holiday giveaway extravaganza! It’s simple: Just follow the instructions below to enter for your chance to win. Ah, but to win what? There’s always a catch, isn’t there? Each “Naughty or Nice” giveaway features two prizes: a totally sweet bundle of holiday cheer and, um, a lump of coal. Winners are selected randomly, we assure you. Of course, who’s to say luck isn’t dependent on virtue … Have you been naughty? Or nice?

With the holidays in mind, we’re going to be giving away … wait for it … MOVIES with each Joystiq Box Office post on Friday from today through January 1! Simply leave a comment below telling us what you’ll be watching on your Xbox, PS3, PC, PSP, DS, OMG or whatever (whether it be naughty or nice) and we’ll pick winners at random each week to receive a nifty prize. This week we’re joining the rest of Joyswag and going Naughty or Nice. Five “Nice” winners will win a copy of District 9 on Blu-ray, which includes the God of War III demo, and one “Naughty” winner will wind up with a copy of the American Godzilla on Blu-ray.

Recommendation of the Week:

Inglourious Basterds (Blu-ray, $39.95 suggested retail)
If you haven’t already seen this film, then you owe it to yourself to check it out in high definition. This is definitely Tarantino’s most mature film to date, and despite numerous trailers out there, it’s not a gory, Nazi slaughter-fest. There is some violence, to be sure, but I’ve talked to people who avoided this in theaters because they thought it was going to be torture porn. There’s an extremely good film in here, and what’s really compelling is that it’s nearly two movies in one. The story of the Basterds and the story of a woman who owns a theater run separate courses throughout the film until a head-on collision at the end, but they stand on their own very well. Extremely crisp and sharp in HD and filled with extras, including the bizarre but hilarious “Quentin Tarantino’s Camera Angel,” this is a must-see, must-own, must-covet title.

Read on for the rest of the recommendations, and as usual, we’ll see you at the popcorn sta — well, actually, we won’t see you at all. But you catch our drift. Plus, be sure to tell us what you’ll be watching, or what you’ve seen recently that bowled you over.

+ Video: Behind the Scenes of Prince of Persia Movie By 18 December 2009 at 12:10 pm and have No Comments

A new behind-the-scenes video preview of the Prince of Persia film fleshes out the character of the Prince himself, named “Dastan” (no relation) in the movie.

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Mike Newell explain that the Prince’s character is — wait for it — a lovable rogue! Always getting into scrapes and barely getting himself out of them! Oh, that scamp.

There’s also lots more footage of Gyllenhall and/or his stunt double doing backflips off walls, jumping over rooftops and generally reenacting the videogame.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will arrive in theaters on May 28.

We can’t be gaming all the time, despite our best efforts, and from time to time we’ll actually take advantage of the movie-playing abilities on our gaming systems. JBO features our top picks for XBL, PSN, Netflix’s Watch Instantly and Blu-ray each week.

With the holidays in mind, we’re going to be giving away … wait for it … MOVIES with each Joystiq Box Office post on Friday from today through January 1! Simply leave a comment below telling us what you’ll be watching on your Xbox, PS3, PC, PSP, DS, OMG or whatever, and we’ll pick two winners at random each week to receive a nifty prize. This week we’ll be giving away one copy of Disney/Pixar’s amazing Up and one copy of the romantic comedy The Ugly Truth. Now before you cringe in terror over a Katherine Heigl / Gerard Butler romcom, consider this: It’ll make your movie collection look sensitive. Both movies come with an additional digital copy that you can stick on your computer, your PSP, your iPod, what have you. Read the complete rules at the end of this post, and good luck!

Recommendation of the Week:

The Mel Brooks Collection (Blu-ray, $139.99 suggested retail)
I can’t recommend this set highly enough. First of all, it includes nine Mel Brooks films: Twelve Chairs, To Be Or Not To Be, Silent Movie, History of the World: Part 1, High Anxiety, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights, many of which are making their Blu-ray debut. Second, it includes a ton of extra features: just the Young Frankenstein disc alone is loaded with tons of fun stuff, including a “Blücher Button” for instant horse whinnying sounds. Third, it’s packaged in a long case containing an artbook about all about Mel Brooks and his movies called “All About Mel Brooks.” Fourth, it’s Mel Brooks, and you need a few laughs in high definition. Amazon has this right now for $92.99, whittling it down to almost ten bucks a movie. You won’t be sorry.

Read on for the rest of the recommendations, and as usual, we’ll see you at the popcorn sta — well, actually, we won’t see you at all. But you catch our drift. Plus, be sure to tell us what you’ll be watching, or what you’ve seen recently that bowled you over.

+ Transformers staying home for Transformers: War for Cybertron By 11 December 2009 at 10:15 am and have No Comments

The latest Transformers game, War for Cybertron, takes place before the Autobots and Decepticons arrived on Earth. As such, they have no concept of our Earth “trucks” and “awesome jets,” and can only transform into … things that look pretty much like trucks and awesome jets, but alien.

The teaser after the break introduces the setting for the new High Moon-developed title, and Game Informer promises more info on its constantly updating War for Cybertron hub page. If the new locale and exotic transformations don’t grab you, think about this: all humans are millions of miles away from Cybertron, so unlike the movies, you’ll actually get to see the Transformers in this game.
